What is this Study About?
This study is to find out about the experiences of queer youth online and how that participation affects their health. Experiences to be asked about include your online activities, what websites and apps you like to use, your health, and your experiences as a queer person.
The survey will take about 20-30 minutes. After you complete the survey, you will have the chance to record a video for us, telling us about your experiences. But if you only want to do the survey – that’s OK too!
You may sign up to find out about the study results by joining our mailing list on our website or following us online!

What are the Risks?
There are only a few risks to taking the survey. You may feel uncomfortable or upset when telling us about your experiences. If you feel uncomfortable, you may stop the survey and exit the survey window at any time by using the 'Leave the Survey' buttons at the bottom of the page. You may also skip any questions you do not want to answer. A list of resources is available at the end of the survey, or you may contact us to receive more resources.
If you’re worried about how to keep your online activities private, Kids Help Phone has a great website!
Keep It Private
What are the Benefits?
There are no direct benefits to you. But you will be able to share your personal experience through participation, and may feel good about doing so. This study will help the research team to learn more about queer youth, and help us understand what they are doing online.
What Do You Get for Taking The Survey?
The more questions you answer, the more points you get – think of it like a game! These points are called “#queery Bucks”. The more #queery Bucks you get by answering questions, the more chances you have to win prizes. You will not gain or lose #queery Bucks for skipping questions. You will be able to enter a raffle for one of 100 electronic gift cards ($25.00 value) to Amazon or iTunes. If you get enough #queery Bucks you may get extra entries, or the chance to win one of 5 iPad Minis! If you’re into Fandom, you can also answer some questions on that and enter a raffle for a bonus prize! All you need to do is enter an email address. We suggest you use an email address that is private, and it is hard to tell who you are. If you win an iPad, we will help arrange to ship it to you safely.
How Will We Keep Your Answers Safe?
The survey security is very safe, and all the information we get will be private. But, this research record may be reviewed by government agencies, authorized outside individuals, or the Institutional Research Ethics Board (the committee that oversees all research at the University of Toronto). We will keep your answers to the survey for seven years following the end of data collection (until August 2023). Only members of the research team will have access to the information you give us.
Do You Have To Take The Survey?
You do not have to take the survey. If you do not want to take the survey, you don’t have to. You may also skip questions you do not want to answer. You don’t lose #queery Bucks for not answering. You may stop the survey and exit the survey window at any time by using the 'Leave the Survey' buttons at the bottom of the page, or skip ahead to the raffles with the #queery Bucks you’ve earned so far. We will never tell anyone any information about you.
This study is funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada.
If you would like to take the survey, please press the Agree Button. Any information you give will only be used for research and your comments will remain anonymous and confidential at all times. Anonymous means you don't share who you are. Confidential means whatever you share with us is safe.
